#1 James William Charlton (1866 - 1938) was the son of John James Clarke Charlton, and Mary Burns. He was born in Liverpool, Lancashire on the 11th March 1866, at 76 South Chester Street. James William Charlton married Sarah Inness on the 5th August 1889, at St Mary's, Kirkdale, in Liverpool, Lancashire.

James William Charlton and Sarah Inness had 11 children;
*Elizabeth (Lilly) Charlton (born 1890) was born 6th June 1890, and baptised at St Peter's Liverpool on the 1st July 1890. She worked as a clerk for Dix Bros (an upholstery warehouse). Lilly married Samuel Owens (a joiner in the building trade) on the 27th October 1915. Together they had at least two children.
*Mary (Polly) Charlton (1892 - 1953) was born 12th October 1892, in Liverpool, Lancs. She was a laundress (1911 census). She married William Henry Barlow (known as Harry), a boiler maker, in 1912, in West Derby, Lancs. Together they had 3 sons. Mary Charlton died in 1953, in Melbourne, Australia, after having travelled there when her son James William had emigrated with his family.
*John Henry (Harry) Charlton (1893 - 1977) was born 21st August 1893, in Liverpool, Lancs. He joined the army in 1914, and fought with the Liverpool regiment. Harry worked as a department manager for Armour & Co Ltd in Liverpool, in1921. He married Margaret Cooper in 1922, in West Derby, Lancs. Together they had at least two children. In 1939 Harry Charlton was living in Harrow and working as a clerk for a provisions merchant. Harry Charlton died in July 1977, in Harrow, Greater London.
* James William (Jim) Charlton (1895 - 1916) was born 28th February 1895, in Liverpool, Lancs. He joined the army in 1914, at the age of 19. He fought with the Kings Liverpool regiment, 17th battalion, and died in combat on 28th June 1916, in France. 
*Alison Ellen Charlton (1898 - 1971) was born 10th March 1898, in Toxteth Park, Liverpool, Lancs. In 1921 she was a cashier clerk for Jas Lyons Co Ltd (a caterer). In early 1926 Alison Charlton married William McCulloch, an electrical fitter. They lived together in Watford, Herts.  Alison Charlton died in 1971, and was buried in Watford, Herts.
*William (Billy) Charlton (1899 - 1973) was born 12th September 1899, and was baptised on 23rd November 1899 at St Chad with Christchurch in Everton, Liverpool, Lancs. Billy Charlton  enlisted in 1915, at the age of 15, and served in the war with the Kings Liverpool regiment. He survived the war. Billy Charlton married Margaret Woods on 29th March 1925, at St Mary's Kirkdale, Lancs. Together they had at least 3 daughters and one son. William Charlton died 6th December 1973, near Ormskirk, Lancs.
*Arthur Douglas Charlton (1902 - 1978) was born on the 21st March 1902, in Liverpool, Lancs. In 1921 he was stationed at Kirkdale Barracks as a private with the Kings Liverpool Regiment. In 1939 Arthur was working as a bus conductor for the Liverpool Corporation. Arthur married Janet Titherington (a shop girl for a boot shop), in 1925, in Liverpool, and together they had at least 3 daughters and 1 son. Two of the daughters emigrated to the USA following WWII, as war brides. Arthur Douglas Charlton died in 1978, in Liverpool, Lancs.
*Edith Charlton (1904 - 1995) was born 5th May 1904, in Liverpool, Lancs. In 1921 she was working as a 'picture and row attendant' for the Royal Super Cinema, on Breck Street. Edith Charlton married Joseph Bell Holding on 23rd December 1935, in a double wedding with her younger sister Kathleen, and Joseph Bell Holding's friend and fellow soldier Arthur Moseley. Edith and Joseph had two children together. On the death of her sister, and brother-in-law Edith and Joseph adopted their daughter and her niece. Edith Charlton died in Lancaster, Lancs in 1995, at the age of 91.
*Gertrude Charlton (1908 - 1974) was born 9th November 1908, in Liverpool, Lancs. Gert married Aubrey Tilcock, a widower, and metal finisher on cars, from Dunstable, Bedfordshire, in 1937. They had one son and one daughter together. Gertrude Charlton died 11th January 1974, in Bedfordshire.
*Frank Ernest Charlton (1910 - 1995) was born 25th March 1910, in Liverpool, Lancs. Frank married Esther Larkin in 1939, in Birmingham, Warwickshire. He was a Birmingham Corporation Omnibus driver. Together they had two sons. Frank Charlton died on 7th May 1995.
*Kathleen Charlton (1911 - 1939) was born in 1911, in Liverpool, Lancs. On 23rd December 1935 Kathleen married Alfred Moseley, a soldier in the Kings Own, from Edmonton, Middlesex. Together they had just one child, a daughter. Alfred died whilst serving in Palestine, in 1938. Kathleen died 6th April 1939, in Lancaster, after an intestinal blockage. As mentioned above, when Kathleen died, leaving their daughter an orphan, Edith Charlton and her husband Joseph Bell Holding adopted Kathleen's daughter, and raised her as their own.
